Packaging and Storage Tips
PACKING
-
Clean and thoroughly dry appliances. Place a container of salt inside freezers and refrigerators to help to absorb moisture.
-
Pack books flat in small boxes for easy lifting.
-
Never store perishables or food which could decay or attract insects or rodents.
-
Pack mirrors, windows and screens on edge, not flat. Protect them by packing individually with strong cardboard.
-
Use plenty of packing paper for dishes and glasses, wrapping individually.
-
Pictures and mirrors should be wrapped in cardboard, marked: FRAGILE and stacked on end.
-
Furniture with drawers can be utilized as storage places for pictures, nick-knacks, china, silverware and small items. Wrap them in tablecloths, towels or blankets.
-
Protect furniture and mattresses with specially designed plastic cover or sheets.
-
Large appliances make excellent “packing cases” for towels and clothes etc.
-
If your tables have removable legs, ‘break down’ for easier and safer storage.
-
Shovels, hoes, rakes and hoses can be stored together in empty trash cans.
-
To maximize storage space use uniform size boxes. Be sure boxes are strong enough to hold 25lbs. to 30lbs. Do not pack too heavy.
-
Pack boxes full.
-
List contents on all four sides of the box, number and seal with tape.
STORING
-
Plan your storage space, placing items that you need to access in the front. Allow for walkways.
-
Store most valuable items in the back of the space.
-
List inventory of stored items and keep it in a safe place.
-
Prepare your space by placing a protective cover on the floor under your goods
-
Place your storage items on 2 x 4 boards or pallets to guard against dampness. Any concrete floor may become cold and damp.
-
If you stand mattresses on their side, “prop” them so they stand straight, otherwise they may tend to bend out of shape and become lumpy.
-
Store heaviest boxes on bottom.
-
Use good quality lock on your door. Cheap locks rust and do not provide good security.
DO NOT STORE
-
Food - unless in sealed cans
-
Plants
-
Gasoline, petroleum products, flammable fluids prohibited
-
Fireworks, propane tank - prohibited
-
Ammunition only by special permit
